The Time’s Come to Play

As I get ready for my yearly Hocus Pocus viewing, I’m reminded of how utterly perfect this ‘Come Little Children’ cover is by Erutan. The music mixed with the quick cuts and fades by Krystalb2000 and Tekkerue (also publishing jointly under VidDuality), bring attention to the theme of Hunger Games that’s often overlooked by the franchise’s marketing: it’s a series about children being forced to fight to the death for entertainment. Since kiddie death matches aren’t the easiest to promote, marketers instead focus on the romantic love triangle or the aesthetics of Katniss and/or the Capital. From a marketing standpoint, I completely understand the highlighting of nail polishjewelry, and smoochies sizzle gloss over say the reused land mines that Katniss trips to blow up the Career’s supplies. It’s the same thinking Marvel employed with making Captain America’s enemies Hydra (which you can sell toys of) versus explicitly Nazis (not so kid friendly). Like in the Captain America example though, the marketing and resulting metatext waters down the message of the original product.

This is all a long way of saying that fans and fan producers do not operate under the same return on investment thinking. Which results in amazing creations like the above video. The siren call of the Capital calls the children to it’s cauldron, where it wants to use the eyes of Rue or tongue of Foxface for it’s own brew of total control. Visually striking and a must watch for this Halloween season.
